Absorb Plus Usage Guidelines

If you have lost your ability to digest or absorb nutrients, have lost your appetite, are experiencing nausea, or have difficulties chewing or swallowing, Absorb Plus is a quick, easy, 100% natural way to nourish your body with optimum nutrition and high quality protein. Absorb Plus’ vitamin and mineral profile is one of the most extensive to be found, and it contains the highest quality cold-extracted whey protein isolate available.

Whether you need to gain weight (muscle), or just increase your nutrition and absorption of nutrients, Absorb Plus is a quick and easy way to nourish your body. People report better sleep, less pain and more energy by using these nutritious alkaline shakes.

Absorb Plus is a delicious liquid diet supplement shake made of the highest quality, natural, elemental (pre-digested) ingredients, specifically formulated for maximum tolerance by those with stomach and bowel disorders and sensitivities. Absorb Plus requires very little digestion and is absorbed quickly by the body, making it ideal for those with gastrointestinal problems or difficulty eating or digesting food.

Former Crohn’s disease sufferer Jini Patel Thompson developed this product for herself because, at 5 foot seven and 99 pounds, she needed it to restore her health and save her own life. She has since received thousands of letters and emails from other people telling her how Absorb Plus has given them their health and their life back.

An elemental diet is also referred to as a bowel rest diet. An elemental diet is a liquid diet that contains all the basic nutrients your body needs in pre-digested form, so they are easily and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.  An elemental diet supplies your nutritional needs while giving your digestive system a rest.

The stool that results from an elemental diet is greatly reduced in volume and usually liquid, so it gives your colon a rest from passing normal bowel movements, and allows your colon and bowel to heal faster.

For extensive information on how to implement an elemental diet, including tips and tricks to make it easier, be sure and listen to (or read the transcript for) this Elemental Diet Teleseminar.

Researchers assessed 26 patients with Crohn’s disease in a 2006 clinical trial. The patients used a combination of an elemental diet for half of their food intake (900 to 1200 calories per day) and then whatever they wished for the other half (an unrestricted ”free diet”). The control group consisted of another 25 patients with Crohn’s disease who consumed a 100% unrestricted diet – whatever they wanted to eat.

Then, the researchers measured the recurrence of relapse (symptom flare-up) over a two-year period. The relapse rate in the half elemental diet group was significantly lower – only 34.6% – versus a relapse rate of 64% in the unrestricted free diet group.

So if you don’t have the willpower, or the need, to do a full elemental diet, this study shows you still have a good chance (70%) of avoiding flare-ups from only a half-elemental diet.

If you are in an active disease state, then you need a lot of extra calories (and protein) for healing and tissue repair, in addition to the calories normally needed by a person of your height and weight. If you are a child or teenager (still growing), you also need a lot of extra calories to fuel your growth. If you are a tall or heavy person, you will need more calories per day than a short or small-boned, light person.

If you want to gain weight, then you need to take in extra calories – over what your body needs – to put on weight. If you want to lose weight, then calculate your intake of calories/liquid diet shakes according to your desired body weight, not your current body weight. This will allow you to lose fat, while still nourishing your body and your muscles.

Based on our experience with thousands of people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who have used Absorb Plus, the basic calculation for figuring out how many shakes you need to take in each day on an exclusively liquid diet is 17 calories per pound of body weight per day for an inactive adult.

This means if you are an inactive adult who weighs 120 pounds, you need to consume 2040 calories per day (120 x 17 = 2040) to maintain your weight. If you mix your Absorb Plus shakes with water and 1 tablespoon of flax or Udo’s Choice Oil, then each shake is 485 calories. Therefore, you need to drink 4.2 shakes per day to not lose weight (maintain your existing weight).

  • The calculation for an active adult is 20 calories per pound, daily.
  • A growing child or teenager: 35 calories per pound, daily.
  • A pregnant or nursing woman: 25 calories per pound, daily.

If in doubt, start with 6 shakes per day and then increase from there until you start gaining weight. It’s very individual; so don’t be afraid to experiment. Remember, these calculations are for people using ONLY Absorb Plus as their sole food source, during an elemental liquid diet.

*Do not exceed 12 servings of Absorb Plus per day.

Based on our experience with thousands of people with active inflammatory bowel disease who have used Absorb Plus, the basic calculation for figuring out how many shakes you need to consume each day to gain weight (about 2 pounds per week) is:

  • An inactive adult: 17 calories per pound of body weight + 2 additional shakes per day.
  • An active adult: 20 calories per pound + 3 additional shakes per day.
  • Child or teenager: 40 calories per pound, per day (but a minimum of 5 shakes a day).
  • Pregnant or nursing woman: 25 calories per pound + 2 or 3 additional shakes per day.

Again, if in doubt, start with 6 shakes per day and then increase from there until you start gaining weight. When Absorb Plus formulator Jini Patel Thompson was suffering from serious Crohn’s disease and weighed only 99 pounds (she’s 5’7″), she drank 9 shakes per day and gained 36 pounds in six weeks. When she weighed 115 pounds, she drank 6 shakes per day to gradually gain 5 pounds in three weeks. Calorie needs are very individual, so don’t be afraid to experiment, especially if you have a high metabolism.

If you are using Absorb Plus along with regular foods, then use the calorie guidelines below, but drink only the number of shakes you need per day to make up the missing recommended calories from your regular diet. Remember, one serving of Absorb Plus Vanilla (mixed with water and 1 tablespoon flax or Udo’s Oil) = 485 calories per shake.

  • An inactive adult: 17 calories per pound of body weight
  • An active adult is 20 calories per pound, daily.
  • A growing child or teenager: 35 calories per pound, daily.
  • A pregnant or nursing woman: 25 calories per pound, daily.

Note: If you are someone with a high metabolism, then you may also need additional shakes (exceeding the calorie counts given above). Basically, use these calculations as a rough guideline. But since each body uses calories differently, adjust up or down according to your body’s needs.

The bottom line: If in doubt, start with 2 shakes per day, in addition to your regular (well-tolerated) food intake, and then increase from there if needed.

*Do not exceed 12 servings of Absorb Plus per day.

As you know, people with inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome are hypersensitive, and have to be very careful in order to avoid a flare-up during detoxifying. A detox that works well for most people is to combine Absorb Plus with vegetable, bone and medicinal mushroom broths, along with fresh vegetable juices (with a little apple juice or stevia added for sweetness) and a number of targeted supplements.

We purposely did not include any fat in the Absorb Plus formula, due to people’s extreme variance in fat tolerance, especially people with a colon or bowel syndrome. Ideally, you want to add as much oil as you can tolerate per shake because, aside from its health benefits, adding oil helps to increase the calorie count per shake.

The recommended supplement calculations are based upon you being able to add 1 tablespoon of cold pressed organic flax oil, or Udo’s Choice Oil to each 365 calorie nutrition and protein shake (which adds an additional 120 calories).

If you can only tolerate one teaspoon of oil, then that will bring your total calories per shake down to 475. Some people cannot tolerate any fat, so they start with Absorb Plus mixed with just water. Then, as their gastrointestinal tract heals, they can start adding 1/2 teaspoon of oil, then 1 teaspoon, etc. until they are up to the recommended 1 tablespoon of cold pressed, organic flax or Udo’s Oil per shake. Here’s more information on the reasons for fat intolerance and why we recommend flax or Udo’s Choice oil.

On the flip side, if you are mixing Absorb Plus with a liquid other than water (for example, raw milk or almond milk) then that will increase the calorie count per shake accordingly. Keep in mind though, that if you mix Absorb Plus with any other liquid than water, it is no longer elemental.

If you mix Absorb Plus with liquids other than water, it is no longer 100% elemental, but you can use raw cow’s milk, raw goat’s milk or almond milk.
